This week has been an amazing week for Nathan developmentally. I have been in awe of all that he has learned to do this week. For starters, he was taught for the first time on Monday at therapy how to climb stairs. On Tuesday while I was out running some errands, he climbed the stairs (two stairs that lead to a sunken living room) at my moms all on his own. In fact, I was not there to see it and my mom had no idea he could do it (me neither since he had only worked on it one time) either. My mom said that it startled her because he was at the top of the stairs and she knew that she hadn't put him there.
On Wednesday, I was at home vaccumming and turned around to see Nathan standing up against the ottoman, walking around it. It shocked me because I didn't put him there and he has never been able to pull himself up to that high of a surface on his own. Here he is...and he did it by himself.
This week has also been a week of new beginnings in the area of feeding. We have been giving Nathan 1 oz of thickened liquid by mouth 2-3 times a day after each feeding. In the beginning when I was giving him thickened goat milk, he would just push it away. So, I got creative and mixed CHOCOLATE soy milk with coconut milk yogurt (as a thickener) and now he can not get enough of it. I never would have given Bella chocolate as an incentive to eat or drink, but I will do whatever it takes to help this little guy learn how to take all of his calories by mouth. I'll leave the "tough love" part for transitioning to non-chocolate liquids when he has mastered swallowing.
So here is to an amazing week! I wonder what is in store next?

Heres to you Nathan, and the many more milestones to come!
ReplyDeleteWay to go Nathan! I know you're going to knock your parents' socks off with your development.
ReplyDeleteBrandi, your comment about "do whatever it takes" to get Nathan to eat by mouth rings a bell. And the food you're feeding Nathan sounds like health food compared to the junk we used during Natalie's feeding therapy sessions...and I DID. NOT. CARE! She's eating by mouth...the healthy part can come later.
I love weeks like these - where these big "mini-steps" are taken. It always makes me feel like throwing a party! So here we are in Cape Town throwing a party for Nathan.
ReplyDeleteWay to go! What amazing things!
ReplyDeleteHere's to many more great weeks like this one!

Way to go! You are so lucky, I'm so glad Nathan is doing so well. We have to use chocolate and sweets to get Sawyer to swallow, I know what you mean.
